Introduced in 1955 by Winchester the .243 was based on a .308 cartridge necked down to 6mm. The .243 is a popular deer hunting round due to the minimum calibre size for deer in the UK being .240 with a minimum of 1,700 foot pounds of energy. Typically using a 100 grain bullet it can generate 2000 foot pounds of energy.
